Hike and Bike Trail

Community First

In a short span, Eddie Cantu was able to envision and execute the Hike & Bike Trail development. This extensive connection between three major cities– McAllen, Pharr, San Juan— is approximately 7.8 miles long and growing! Construction on the end of the trail in McAllen is nearly completed.

This is the only hike-and-bike trail that connects multiple communities, allowing pedestrians to focus on their uninterrupted exercise while crossing busy roads through four connecting underground tunnels.

Cantu says this unique trail will also promote surrounding residential development:

  • parks
  • public buildings
  • accessing schools
  • additional recreational amenities

The trail was put into motion on July 8, 2015, when the Hidalgo County Metropolitan Planning Organization (HCMPO) approved $6.44 Million in funding for Commissioner Cantu’s proposed Hike & Bike Trail.

Eddie Cantu had always wanted to connect residents and centralize that transportation on a large scale. The vision is a reality years later, with the trail still developing and extending to nearby sister cities. His wish – for more trails to be developed.

Since its construction, this “alternate expressway,” for pedestrians has grown and features lighted pathways, plants native to the valley, and educational signs for a genuinely peaceful immersive RGV experience.

“One of the biggest problems we face for the future of Hidalgo County is childhood obesity and all its associated illnesses. I believe that by providing spaces like the P2 H&B we are meeting our responsibility as elected officials to do what is best for the future of our community and meeting that challenge in a collective and regional way.” – Eddie Cantu, Commissioner Precinct 2
